NASA is issuing a warning for all who are out buying special glasses to watch the solar eclipse.
With the spike in sales, they are concerned that some may be getting scammed, and the wrong products can cause major damage to your eyes.
Unlike other areas of the country-- where the eclipse will pass directly overhead-- Chicago won't see a total eclipse, which can make it especially dangerous.
Kris McCall is the Director of the Cernan Earth and Space Center, and warns that you won't even feel the pain as your retina is damaged.
Viewers should use eclipse safety glasses, which are fairly cheap or free, and be sure they include a certified ISO marking found on the inside of the glasses.
The glasses should be less than 3 years old and only be able to see the sun.
If you're using a phone to take a picture-- a lens should go over the camera.
McCall says binoculars and telescopes without proper filters actually capture and focus the light on your eye even more.
Other homemade solutions to viewing the eclipse include a kitchen colander or a Ritz cracker.
Eclipse glasses can be found online or at some local libraries, like the main branch in downtown South Bend, which will be hosting viewing parties the day of.
Notre Dame also plans to give out glasses the day of the eclipse near the Jordan Hall of Science.
