Nope NASA didn't say the world is going dark for 15 days in November

Every couple of years a rumor pops up that claims NASA is confirming - emphasis on CONFIRMING - the Earth will experience 15 days of darkness at a certain point.

Now, the bogus claim is back, coming just days after the total solar eclipse that had everyone watching the sky for just a minute or two of darkness as the moon blocked the sun.

The latest rumor says the Earth will experience 15 days of darkness in November 2017.

"NASA confirms what's been circling the web recently - our planet Earth will experience total darkness for 15 days in November 2017 starting from Nov. 15-29," the rumor claims.

It continues:

"Upon more detailed examination the astronomers from NASA confirmed that the phenomenon will start on Nov.15 at 3 a.m. and will most likely last until Nov. 30, 4:45 pm. According to experts this blackout will be caused by an astronomical event between Jupiter and Venus. There was even a detailed 1000 pages document written by Charles Bolden, head of NASA explaining the strange event to officials at the White House."

And it goes on and on, capping it off with Bolden - who in reality resigned his post in January - telling everyone the more than two weeks of unexpected darkness isn't really a big deal.

"We do not expect any major effects from the blackout event. The only effect this event will have on Earth is an increase of 6 - 8 degrees in temperature. The polar cap will be mostly affected by this. No one should worry much. This event would be similar to what Alaskans experience in the winter," Bolden is quoted as saying.

The whole thing is a bunch of bunk of course. And it's not even new bunk.

The rumor was first reported on fake news websites in 2015 and was quickly picked up on social media. It showed up again in 2016 before making yet another appearance online this week in the wake of the Great American Eclipse that cut a path across North America.

The myth has been debunked by myth-busting website Snopes.com and a host of scientists. And while NASA has been busy with all-things eclipse, it has not said - confirmed or not - two weeks of darkness in our near future.
