Just in time for Halloween, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration released a playlist of “spooky sounds” from outer space, recorded by its spacecraft across the solar system.
It’s not quite the “Monster Mash,” but NASA said the 22-track playlist of cosmic cries “is sure to make your skin crawl.” The noises are taken from radio emissions converted to sound tracks from nearby planets and empty space, and were recorded by NASA probes up to hundreds of millions of miles away.
“Soaring to the depths of our universe, gallant spacecraft roam the cosmos, snapping images of celestial wonders,” NASA wrote in the playlist’s description. “Some spacecraft have instruments capable of capturing radio emissions. When scientists convert these to sound waves, the results are eerie to hear.”

Some of the featured sounds include futuristic blips taken from Saturn’s poles and the chorus of metallic chirps of plasma waves rolling through the vacuum of space near Earth. NASA spacecraft also recorded the popping and crackling of being “pelted by dust particles and small rocks” while flying by a comet, the reverberating tones of crossing Jupiter’s bow shock, the static fog of the atmosphere of Saturn’s moon Titan, and more.
The emissions converted to sounds for the playlist were picked up by spacecraft including Juno, Kepler, Voyager, Stardust, Cassini, and other probes.
