Wheeling Jesuit University Hosts NASA Space Day Event for Area Students

Photos by Scott McCloskey Sixth-graders from The Linsly School take turns Friday participating in an air propelled bottle rocket launching experiment during the fourth annual NASA Space Day. The event was hosted by Wheeling Jesuit University.

WHEELING — Some students spent the day launching air-propelled paper rockets. Others pedaled bikes fast to generate enough electricity to light up a board of light bulbs.

More than 200 regional students spent Friday learning something about science. They participated in the fourth-annual NASA Space Day event sponsored by Wheeling Jesuit University.

The event — which is a collaborative effort between the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium, Wheeling Jesuit University, Bethany College, West Liberty University, The SMART Centre and Student Partnership for the Advancement of Cosmic Exploration — is held in a different location around the state each year as a way to engage and create enthusiasm in science and space exploration through hands-on science experiments, projects and games.

Some had the opportunity to be transformed into astronauts, scientists, engineers and researchers while working together to experience a simulated space mission or explore the “Red Planet,” said Candy Cordwell, NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium Program Manager. She said the day was all about providing students from kindergarten through 12th grade an educational opportunity to learn more about the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program throughout the state.

“What we are saying is, NASA is not only aeronautics, it’s all fields,” said Cordwell. “Science is fun, and we want them to experience that.”

Students participated in more than a half-dozen, hands-on activities throughout the day. They included a dropping parachutes, launching air-propelled paper bottle rockets and learning about the science behind cycling. The activities were designed to create more excitement surrounding science and space.

The event also provided a forum for area college students to present their research of interest in science and mathematics to West Virginia NASA officials during a poster exhibition. The NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium was the financial sponsor of Friday’s events.

SMART Centre Co-owner Robert Strong, who hosted one of the interactive work stations along with his wife, Libby, said the NASA Space Day event is a wonderful educational and fun event that is a natural fit for the SMART Centre. He said the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium is a wonderful agency that works to secure funding for teacher and extension programs such as the Smart Centre’s annual “Star Watch” events.

“They just do wonderful job,” said Strong.

He said it was exciting to be invited to an event the group hosts.

“Anything that they do is going to be so professionally done that you just want to be a part of it,” he said.
