Nitrogen ice plains and alien mountain ranges: NASA releases Pluto flyover

With temperatures dropping to nearly minus-400 degrees Fahrenheit, it's probably wise to at least bring a heavy coat and wear a layer of long underwear if you're going to visit icy Pluto.

If you'd rather just stay toasty on Earth, NASA has released a fascinating flyover of the dwarf planet's terrain.

Created using data from the New Horizons spacecraft and digital models of Pluto, the space agency on Friday offered new looks at far-out body and its moon Charon.

The Pluto flyover begins at highlands near a nitrogen ice plain informally named Sputnik Planitia, passes a pock-marked landscape bordered by alien mountain ranges and ends over the Tartarus Dorsa's "bladed terrain."

NASA said the images are exaggerated "by a factor of two to three times" to emphasize topography and the surface colors have been enhanced to bring out detail.
