A NASA solar scientist will discuss safe viewing of the coming solar eclipse today in a free 30-minute talk in Huntsville. The talk is one of three free talks by NASA experts before the Aug. 21 eclipse and will be followed today by screening of a documentary about chasing eclipses.
Dr. Alphonse Sterling, solar scientist in the Heliophysics and Planetary Science Branch of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, will speak from 5:30-6 p.m. The talk is in the National Geographic Theater at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center's Davidson Center for Space Exploration.
Sterling will talk about the importance of the event, his research and how to view the eclipse safely. The film is titled "Black Suns: An Astrophysics Adventure" and features Sterling and a Florida professor as they follow two solar eclipses in 2012.
On Aug. 10, Dr. Dennis Gallagher will discuss his work as a magnetospheric physicist.
One Aug. 17, NASA astronomer Dr. Bill Cooke and solar scientist Mitzi Adams will conclude the series.
