We shall hold you responsible if harm befalls our supporters NASA warns police

SUMMARY
  • NASA has forewarned the police against harming any supporters on the Tuesday mass memorial service.
  • This comes after police boss Japheth Koome claimed that the only meeting scheduled for Tuesday is the inauguration of President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta.
  • NASA supporters had anticipated the swearing-in of Raila as president on the same day.

National Super Alliance (NASA) has promised to hold police responsible for any harm that may befall supporters on the mass memorial service scheduled for Tuesday, November 28.

NASA leaders, led by Co-principal Musalia Mudavadi on Saturday announced that instead of swearing-in Raila as president, they would dedicate the day to a sendoff for those who were allegedly killed by police on November 17 and 21.

They had earlier vowed to swear in Raila at Uhuru Park in an event parallel to the swearing-in of President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta.

In a meeting in Maanzoni Lodge in Machakos County, they gave a way forward after Raila’s refusal to be sworn in. They reminded supporters not to recognize Uhuru as president.

The coalition has cautioned this despite the warning by Nairobi county police commander Japheth Koome not to hold the meeting. The meeting will be held at Jacaranda grounds in Embakasi.

Koome said that the only meeting scheduled for Tuesday is Uhuru’s ceremony and any other meeting will be considered as breaking the law and that the police will deal firmly with anyone convening an illegal gathering.

“Priority will be given to securing the city during the inauguration ceremony of President Uhuru Kenyatta at the Kasarani stadium,” Koome said.

NASA however, through E. Sifuna and Associates sent a letter to Embakasi OCS notifying the police of their intention to pray with the families of those who lost their lives.

Sifuna’s letter read,” “Our client takes great exception to the conduct of your officers who have in the recent past turned on peaceful protesters and harmed them, instead of protecting them.”

He further reminded the police that NASA doesn’t require any permission from them since they had duly submitted their notification.

In a tweet, the coalition also reminded supporters to come together on Tuesday, despite the warning by Koome.

The NASA fraternity will be holding memorial services at various venues nationwide today for the victims of police brutality and extrajudicial killings, before the mass prayer gathering at Jacaranda Grounds Nairobi tomorrow #Resist— NASA Coalition (@CoalitionNASAKe) November 27, 2017
