Toddlers prove their stuff at NASA mini camp

SHOW LOW — The letter “E” is now more than just a vowel for a group of toddlers. “E” was for engineering at the Special Paper Airplane Itsy Bitsy Storytime.

The fun and educational session for ages 0 to 5 was held Wednesday at the Show Low Public Library. Show Low is one of only 75 U.S. public libraries selected to receive an educational grant from National Aeronautic and Space Administration, and become a NASA@ My Library partner. Show Low Public Library is the only library in Arizona selected for the program.

Library staff member, Elorah Tower, began the session by reading a story that incorporated the idea of flight. Singing, dancing, clapping, stomping, color matching and practicing the sign language alphabet wrapped up story time and prepared the kids for making paper airplanes.

Then staff member Heather Hatcher came on scene wearing her NASA shirt. She led the little ones in game of “follow the leader” where they held their arms out and made airplane noises. The coup de grace was showing the kids how to fly paper airplanes and paper torpedoes. The last exercise involved the parents as they cut out their own paper torpedoes that turned curly-cues through the air.

Two other NASA events one for older children was held Thursday and an Adult Lego Club was held on Friday.
