NASA watching sunspot as it becomes visible could cause solar flares auroras

Sunspot, you say?

A dark region of the Sun comprised of magnetic fields, has rotated into view, and was captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory.

The sunspot — called Active Region 12665 — was tracked between July 5 and 11. Sunspots often develop on the massive, heat-producing star.

The “spots” are grouped gasses that appear darker than the Sun. That’s because they are, on average, 4,000 degrees cooler than the solar surface (8,000 degrees compared to 12,000 degrees), KTAR News reports.

However, they’re less common during the Sun’s period of low activity, called a solar minimum. This comes during the Sun’s customary 11-year cycle. The minimum is expected to occur around 2019 or 2020, KTAR News writes.

According to a release from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center on Phys.org, the area is presently the only sunspot group.

Looking solely at one of the spots, it may appear miniscule in comparison to the massive star. But the spot is actually far larger than the earth.

According to the SDO’s webpage, the sunspot could cause solar flares.

These are bursts of radiation from the sun’s surface, related to the spots. They can cause electromagnetic disturbances on the earth — and interfere with radio communication and power grids.

They can also create visible auroras (which are associated with the way the particles meet Earth’s atmosphere).

The SDO maintains that it is “too early to predict just what it will do [with regard to flares].”

Between Sept. 1-2, 1859, Earth experienced one of the strongest geomagnetic storms — in what was called the Carrington Event.

Had the event occurred today, studies show that the damage could have been more widespread, thanks to current technology.
